The Northfork Herd is the cornerstone of Heartland Bison Ranch's breeding program and serves as the foundation for the replacement females we proudly offer to producers across North America. Developed through years of thoughtful genetic selection, this herd is focused on producing functional, fertile, and long-lived females that will thrive in a variety of production environments while preserving the natural advantages of the North American bison.

The herd is comprised of carefully selected foundation females from some of the industry's most respected breeding programs, including Sheyenne River Ranch, Irish Creek Bison Ranch, and a select group of elite, performance-tested females acquired through the renowned Dakota Territory Buffalo Association's 2-Year-Old Bred Heifer Challenge. Each female was selected for exceptional maternal ability, structural correctness, fertility, disposition, and overall productivity—traits that form the backbone of a sustainable bison herd.

Complementing these females is an outstanding group of herd bulls led by Dakota Gold, a premier herd sire acquired from Cammack Buffalo Ranch. Dakota Gold earned recognition as one of the highest-selling bulls in the prestigious Young Guns Performance-Tested Bull Challenge, demonstrating the growth, performance, and structural soundness we strive to incorporate throughout our breeding program. Alongside Dakota Gold, the herd also features carefully selected Heartland Bison Ranch herd sires that continue to advance the consistency and quality of each new calf crop.

The primary mission of the Northfork Herd is to produce the next generation of foundation females. Every breeding decision is made with the long-term success of commercial and seedstock producers in mind.
