Nestled in the heart of Heartland Bison Ranch, the Heartland Trading Post is more than a country store, it's a place where history, heritage, and handcrafted quality come together..

 

On the shore of Girard Lake in Pierce County, North Dakota, the land still holds the memory of an earlier frontier world. On this ranch, a surviving foundation marks the site of an early structure long believed to have been a small trading post. Inside Heartland Trading Post, a hand-painted scene preserves that tradition, identifying the fur trader and trapper Girard—remembered in the inscription as “Gireau”—as the namesake of the lake and the founder of a small post along its edge.

 

The written historical record does not confirm every part of that tradition with certainty. It does, however, point strongly to one real historical figure: Antoine Girard, a French-Canadian pioneer whose name appears in North Dakota history and whose frontier career makes him the most likely namesake of Girard Lake.

Heartland Trading Post stands in conversation with that older story. Its name is more than a modern identity; it is a tribute to the trading history associated with this shoreline, this ranch, and this lake.
